Message from the Superintendent

Mensaje de la Superintendente

Hello, Mazapan Family!

We are at the end of our first week of #MazapanVirtual and I am incredibly proud of all of our students, teachers, and parents! I know that this is a new process for all and appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we are all adapting to virtual learning.  I have heard several positive comments of the fun, new experiences students are having, but also know that there are still many areas of opportunity; specifically in regard to the workload of students. We are working each day in response to feedback and observation to adjust, simplify, and add more flexibility to the process for everyone involved.

We are Listening

Next week, we will be implementing a modified schedule (see below) and reducing the number of classes that meet each day.  This decision was made by taking into account the following:

For students:

    1. The amount of time students spend in front of the computer and the workload required for daily classes (4-5 versus 8).
    2. More time for students to work on each assignment
    3. Inability to connect to the internet at certain times/ household situations/ sharing of devices/ different levels of support and supervision in homes.
    4. Allow for quality over quantity
    5. Reduce stress and frustration
    6. Give them time to do other activities with family member at home

For Parents:

    1. The amount of time parents spend in front of the computer and the number of assignments given to students
    2. Parents of younger kids who do not speak English
    3. Families that have multiple kids
    4. Students working on and completing assignments at different times during the day
    5. Parents are still working and don’t always have the opportunity to check in with their children during the school day
    6. Provide more time to do other activities with their children (family bonding opportunities)

For teachers:

    1. The amount of time teachers spend in front of the computer
    2. Teachers will have additional time to adapt plans, making them more tailored to distance learning.
    3. Teachers will be more available to provide support
    4. Fewer assignments reduce the grading load for teachers, allowing for better and quicker feedback.
    5. Allow quality over quantity
    6. Easier to schedule synchronized meetings, when appropriate

We are here to GUIDE and HELP

As parents, we ask your support in providing a place for your child to work, and your support in keeping them engaged in learning, but we do not expect you to be their teacher. Learning is a journey, and as students are learning, it is likely they will run into things they do not understand. If your child is not understanding something, please have them contact their teacher, who is standing by to help during school hours (8:00-3:00) with ANY question that they may have (through email or google chats) as we are here to support the learning process in every way and want to have face-to-face interaction and the teacher’s role is to provide instructions and support along the way (we certainly miss being on campus with our students, and are eager to see and interact with them, as well)!

Communication is Key

We hope that the changes implemented will help to alleviate some of the stress that we have observed on part of all of our stakeholders, but we know that there is still a learning curve for all of us in adapting to virtual learning. Please feel free to share your feedback of the process with your child’s teacher, as this will help us in adapting our virtual learning process to best meet our students’ (and wonderful parents’) needs. We also would love to “see” your child in action through participation in our Spirit Week (info below) and through the use of #MazapanVirtual on social media.

Thank you!

Thank you for your role in this journey, for your patience as we all adjust to digital learning, and for your support as we do our best to continue to provide quality learning for our students amidst this unusual circumstance!  May everyone remain safe and healthy, enjoying time together at home.

In Pelican Spirit,
