Growing Healthy Kids

As we move into rainy season and the germs are beginning to spread, it is important that we build our defenses through proper, balanced nutrition and help our kids to stay healthy.  We are partnering with parents, teachers, our cafeteria to promote healthy eating habits, especially the eating of fruits and vegetables among our students in order to fuel their minds and bodies. As a school, we will be motivating and encouraging students to increase their consumption of fruits and veggies and make healthy choices.

To help promote healthy habits in your child, consider the following:

  • Eat the rainbow- in your child's lunch, include a variety of colors (including fruits and vegetables) or encourage them to buy these snacks in the cafeteria
  • Collaborate in consistency- Support one another as parents by limiting the amount of junk food/ snacks such as sugary, or empty calorie snacks that your child brings to school.  Replace sweet treats with fruits and focus on nutrient dense and balanced foods such as proteins, grains, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. For more information on the recommended amount of each category by age and developmental need, visit https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/childrens-health/in-depth/nutrition-for-kids/art-20049335
  • Explore nutrient packed recipes- Visit health based websites such as http://www.dole.com/en/recipes to find healthy recipes that incorporate nutrient and antioxidant packed foods such as fruits and vegetable and involve your child in meal preparation
  • Encourage healthy habits at home by involving your child in meal preparation and discuss the nutrients provided by each ingredient.
  • Pick recipes together – let them help shop for and have a say in what foods you are making. Picky eaters are more likely to eat things that they have made!
  • Use cooking as a learning opportunity – incorporate lessons they are learning in school, like math, literacy, spelling, science and reading. For younger children, have them work on their motor skills by washing produce or mixing ingredients.
  • Make cooking fun – let your children’s imagination take over when cooking; turn the kitchen into a cooking show, or restaurant to get them really involved! Preschool students can help wash vegetables, tear the lettuce, count the objects.  Elementary students can help measure ingredients, mix ingredients, set the table.  Middle School students can help with recipes, make their own lunch, help with meal planning.  Teenagers can explore diverse cuisine and create recipes from new cultures to share with their families and friends, help with grocery shopping, and compare quality and nutrients. (1)
  • Involve the 5 senses- A study by The University of Eastern Finland explored how the Sapere Method, sensory based learning, among 3-5 year old kindergartners could affect their food choices.  The study found that when students were invited to experience and describe their food with their 5 senses, they were more likely to try, experience, and enjoy new foods as compared to when they were just given the food. (3)
  • Set good examples – show your excitement for eating new foods and being active! This will inspire picky eaters to be excited as well, making them more likely to try new things.
  • Don’t sweat the mess – be sure to stay cool about small spills and messes – they happen. Kids will feel more confident this way, plus it is an opportunity to teach them to clean up small messes on their own.

Helping your children discover food helps increase their likeliness to try new things, reduce mealtime battles and teach them food preparation skills that can last them a lifetime! (1)
