Fourth Grade
Welcome to fourth grade at Mazapan School!
Fourth grade is a time of growth in which students are encouraged to discuss, inquire, and engage in their learning. While growing academically and socially, students are also challenged to become more responsible and independent.
Language Arts- Every day provides students with an opportunity to read and write. We focus on building reading comprehension and fluency and vocabulary building through the fiction and non-fiction selections we read. Students learn grammar and mechanics by applying their skills to a variety of types of writing. Fourth graders are encouraged to discover their own personal enjoyment of reading through self-selected books to read outside of school.
Math- Our students spend the year utilizing the mathematical skills they learned in earlier elementary years on a higher level. Fourth graders develop algebraic concepts and thinking, collect and organize data, work with fractions and probability, and work out long division and multiplication problems. In every math lesson, the critical area of problem solving is reinforced.
Science – Each science topic is reinforced with hands-on lab activities. We discover life science, earth science, and physical science while applying the scientific process to our work.
Social Studies- Fourth graders spend the year exploring the five regions of the United States. We study the land, industry, government, and people of each region. In addition, fourth graders use their research and writing skills in a ten-week research project on their chosen state.
