Second grade is a time of forming habits that will slowly turn students into more fluent English speakers and better writers. Students are encouraged to speak more English throughout the day, and to read chapter books during DEAR time. They learn to use the writing process, and they also have a journal in which they write regularly about any given topic. Their handwriting skills improve, and towards the end of the school year, they are very eager to learn to write in cursive.
In math class, problem solving is one of the main objectives. The students read problems and select the process to solve the problem. In addition, students get plenty of practice in adding and subtracting.
Second graders like art, making projects, and going on field trips. They take pleasure in drawing and painting and have many opportunities to do so. In Social Studies class, they enjoy making models of urban, suburban, and rural communities. Field trips are fun and can also be a great learning experience. We try to go on several of them throughout the school year. First, we visit the fire department and a local factory. When we study life cycles in science class, we visit a ranch.
